Just saw the APs at the Normandie Casino. Best tribute band I've ever seen. Why? Well, as my friend Mark remarked, "they're spot on" -- musically dialed in to the subtle nuances in the early VH recordings and live shows. I remember riding up with a car full of girls to see VH at the LA Sports Arena, just after VH II came out. (The jersey shirt I bought was white with blue sleeves; the VH logo on the front was gold.)I thought of that show tonight when seeing the APs. I also thought: here's a tribute band that has a fucking blast ripping out VH songs, and puts the audience at ease by performing entertainingly, with quips about things that establish common values about this certain strain of American rock that brings us together--e.g., that Van Hagar took itself too seriously and never produced anything like the DLR Halen, that DLR talked about life and love and sex on stage and had fun doing it, that VH was light enough about itself on its first record to include "Ice Cream Man" (always wondered how producer Ted Templeman figured in the song choices on that record), and so on. Rock on. I've seen Alice Unchained 2x, Leg Zepagain 2x, Infinity (last night), and a handful of other less significant tribute acts. The Atomic Punks are in another league entirely. Keep up the good work. We hope to see you at a venue with a solid sound system, such as the HOB. Snare sounded a bit boxy tonight, and the guitar amplitude was too slight, and that slights the songs. Performances were great, and the comedic elements were extraordinary. See you soon.
