Brett and/or Tim, how are Ralph and The Punks for videotaping their shows now? I know back a few years ago it was pretty common to see camcorders at nearly every gig they did, and Ralph *always* grabbed the camcorders in fun and taped the audience, the sole exception being The Whiskey or any club in Hollywood. But, with their rapidly-growing popularity, has their attitude changed about videotaping their shows? I haven't done it since 15 May 1999, which was Bart's last gig with them, and I was considering doing it again when they come to San Diego next month. Didn't want to get in trouble or anything. I've only videotaped 3 shows, and all of those were in '99.
Oh yeah, same goes for Metal Shop gigs.

Well from my understanding, a lot of the places they play will not allow videotaping without permission from the band and the establishment. The House of Blues being one. I don't think the band has issues with people videotaping their shows, although if they show up on Ebay or something, the band probably wouldn't be too happy.
I think it's best to check with the place they're playing first and maybe just dropping the guys an e-mail asking them if it's cool. I'm sure there won't be a problem.

Yeah, I know that isn't the case with Cane's. Unless it's a "big-name, big-time" act they've booked (Quiet Riot, Rob Halford, Vanessa Carlton), they usually allow videotaping. And, I know Ralph doesn't mind, but it is a good point for anyone here wondering the same thing that they should email the band beforehand and request permission.

I know the band is okay with taking pictures and videotaping their shows... however the venue can discourage these activities.
At the Whisky, for example, I had a very bad experience during an Atomic Punks show when I had Ralph's videocamera taken away, right before the big New Year's Eve countdown ![[Mad]](mad.gif)
They insisted, and as far as I know still insist, that the venue requires payment for a "filming permit" (i.e. bribe) to be able to videotape there ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)
I also know that the Anaheim HOB also does not allow photography or videotaping during Atomic Punks shows, unless you have pre-arranged for a photo pass ![[Frown]](frown.gif)
I had similar problems taking photos and videotaping Atomic Punks shows when they performed at The Shack in Anaheim.
And don't get me started on my Metal Shop experiences at the Viper Room, where their security will take your camera out your hand for trying to snap a photo ![[WTF]](graemlins/wtf.gif) I can't even imagine what they would do if someone tried to videotape a show! ![[Irked]](graemlins/irked.gif)
So even if the band is okay with pictures and videotaping, I'd still advise clearing things with the venue beforehand ![[Embarrassed]](redface.gif)
Also... if someone has video of Metal Shop, send an email to albertr@albertr.com, I'd love to have a copy and I should be able to make it worth your while! ![[Thumbs Up!]](graemlins/thumb.gif)

Virtually every club on the Sunset Strip requires a $50 "house payment" when requesting to film a band, unless you're attached to them (crew, manager, etc.). This is the same problem I ran into in '99 that Albert was talking about. It's basically a legal bribe, regardless what they call it. It doesn't matter what the band says, it matters what the venue says. However, off the Strip, it's pretty much open. I've taped them in Pasadena, San Diego, Fullerton, and a few other places that didn't seem to have a problem with it.
As for the Viper Room, when Mike played there with Metal Shop and Tribe Of Judah, they only asked if you had any cameras. Once the bands came out, people were snapping pics left and right, especially at the foot of the stage. I know...I took some myself. But, as Brett stated, it's always good to check beforehand, so you don't end up getting your camera taken away. And, as a general ruel of concert security, they're not allowed to confiscate the videotape, only the camera. If they take the film, they're liable for whatever else *might* be on there (family/personal footage, etc.). They're only allowed to take the camera, and they *must* return it after the show.
