Think about it....this is a deeeeeeeeeeeep philosophical question. I know that Sammy inherently sucks - I know this with all my heart. BUT, what if Ralph, with all his charisma and talent and genius, were up onstage every night doing Sammy Hagar? What then, my friend? Maybe through Ralph I could better understand the Sammy Hagar thing. Ralph could, in a way, open my eyes to the possibilities and potential of a while new world.

Ralph is God.

Ralph, if youre out there and you need anything (weed, women, $) let me know. I will either obtain these things for you or die trying. [Devil]

Actually I have thought about the possibility of the Atomic Punks playing some of Sammy's hits. I like a lot of songs off the OU812 album. Sorry to admit it, but I do. And, I think Ralph would really do an awesome job at covering some of them. That being said, please don't send me hate mail. [Eek!]

Hey there Luvtohumpralph!

Gotta love your name!! LOL! Good humor...and, a lot of truth to it as well. I absolutely adore Ralph too. And, yes, he could just lay down his hatred for Sammy for a spell and rip off some great tunes from back in the day when Sammy was with VH. I know for a fact he could do them well. C'mon, Ralph, can you hear us???? Pretty please?????

In no way have I ever heard of Ralph having "hatred" for Sammy at all. Ralph has spoken about seeing VH with Sammy a few times, and is complimentary of Sammy's history with the band [Frown] (Sam just took VH down a different musical avenue, that is all)

In fact, Ralph and the Atomic Punks have performed, several times, a Van Hagar song ("Why can't this be love?") but in the style of David Lee Roth [Roll Eyes]

Ralph did it in Dave's style, because after all, they are a "tribute to early Van Halen", which he calls the best version of Van Halen there ever was, and many would agree [Thumbs Up!]

Also, his audience are people who love early Van Halen, so when he addresses fans of the other versions of Van Halen (Sammy and Gary) of course he has to say "if you came here expecting to hear Van Hagar, or Gary Cherone... F.U." [Irked] because that is not what the Atomic Punks are about.

Actully it is some really hardcore fans, like me, who you could say have some kind of "hatred" for Sammy (for constantly putting down Dave since day 1 when he joined VH, even when they had never met), and Gary (for putting out a Van Halen album that left a very bad taste with the few remaining Van Halen fans) [Yell]

If Ralph's band started doing all Hagar and Cherone cover songs, even with Ralph's charasma and talent, sadly I'd have to find another tribute band to enjoy [Cry]

Kinda hard to "hate" Gary Cherone, he was pretty much following Ed's marching orders, he had ZERO input on that album. He was smart enough to get out too.

Actually, not his ENTIRE audience loves strictly early Van Halen, some of us (like myself) love ALL Van Halen and were just putting in a request for some Sammy. Not trying to convert the entire band's format to Sammy's version of Van Halen.

And, as far as stating that Ralph has some hatred towards Sammy, well, is it any wonder one would get that impression when he states, "if you came here expecting to hear Van Hagar, or Gary Cherone... F.U.". LOL! Okay? What are we supposed to assume? That he adores Sammy??

All I was saying was that Ralph is extremely talented and could pull off Sammy's VH easily, if he wanted, and he may even broaden his fan base by doing so. That's it, I didn't want to start a war with the die hard early VH fans. I love all VH and so to each his own. We can agree to disagree, can't we? [Thumbs Up!]

Just firing the fans up for the show, that's all. [Smile] He knows a lot of people at the show aren't there to hear "Love Walks In." [Smile]

You're not alone BTW, I have no problem with Sam in VH, as long as Eddie is standing next to him. It's always been about the "King of 10 Fingers and 6 Strings" for me. [Smile]

Yeah, Brett, it's always been Eddie and his unbelievable talent for me as well, good point. That has got to be why I've enjoyed all the versions of Van Halen throughout the years. Thanks for pointing that out. It it weren't for Eddie and his amazing fingers I know I would have ended my love affair with VH long ago.... [Big Grin]

Thanks, Sweetie! [Big Grin]

I'm from Minneapolis, Minnesota. I only see the Punks once a month as well. It totally blows but I'm very lucky, I could live on the East Coast and never see them. The Punks come here often enough, as long as they don't change their schedule and quit coming here. That's my biggest fear! [Scared] They totally ROCK!!

I guess once a month is better than nothing...I must confess though, I Love Van Halen but yesterday I miss the Punks so bad that I went out and bought two Van Halen CD's. I know, you are probably wondering why I don't have them already!!!! I don't exactly know why myself. But I do have them now!!!! [Bouncey] 17 more days to the punks at Paladinos!!!!!Wooohoooo!!! I can't wait!!! I'm gonna be "Unchained"!!!!!

...

Well, maybe I am focusing a lot on the word "expecting."

I have seen my fair share of Atomic Punks shows [Roll Eyes] and because the more recent versions of VH were with Sammy and Gary, there might be audience members, especially the younger ones, who might show up to the Atomic Punks and they expect to hear the most "recent" VH songs that is played on "oldies" stations that play music from the late 80's and the 90's [Roll Eyes]

Well, the Atomic Punks are a tribute to early Van Halen, so if you went to their show expecting to hear songs by Sammy or Gary... well, in the words of Judas Priest, "you've got another thing coming" [Wink]

or... in other words.... F. U.

Hey, if you go to tribute to Missing Persons, you don't expect them to bust out songs by Duran Duran, even though the bands shared the same guitarist, right?

Each VH era was quite different, and to each their own [Thumbs Up!]

If there was a VH tribute called "Why can't this be good" you would expect them to only play Hagar VH songs, right? And if I showed up one night to this band expecting to hear Dave VH songs, well then the Sammy style singer might have to explain "we don't think we're Van Hagar, we just play tribute to the sappiest version of Van Halen there ever was... and if you came here expecting to hear anything that would rock your nuts off, well... F. U. " [Big Grin]

Eddie is legendary guitar talent, no doubt about it, but the stuff he did with Sammy or Gary didn't move me... or make me want to get those recordings. Partly because of the singer's personalities, but mostly because of the music in its entirety (a guitarist doesn't make a band great all by himself, IMHO).

I really don't think Ralph or the band hate Sammy (or Gary), and Ralph has even said to me "come on Albert, you don't really think Sammy was that bad, was he?"... and you can probably guess my answer [Wink]

"Right Now" absolutely moved me. It was so completely different from Dave era VH, but it totally rocked. Great song, great video, great message.

Sammy's alright with me! Anyone who make his own tequila and brings a party wherever he goes, can't be all bad! [Thumbs Up!]

Yeah, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and Michael Anthony, should have fucking just quit and forgot about writing music all together. After Dave left they were nothing. Wow, I just noticed more than half of those guys last names are Van Halen, coincidence? [Razz]

It's too bad Albert, if you ever listened to those album, and I assume you haven't since you didn't buy them, you would know that there are MANY songs that fucking rocked! If you only listen to what the radio stations put out there, then I can understand why you think Van Halen was sappy after Dave left for browner pastures. Good music is good music, there's no gray area. [Smile]

Oh! I gotta find that pic of ya Albert. The one where you're wearing a Van Hagar tour shirt. [Quiet] Just kidding dude. [Big Grin]

Good luck finding (or fabricating) a picture of me in a Van Hagar shirt [Roll Eyes]

I am not completely ignorant of the other eras of Van Halen, I am just not a fan the VH music other than the Dave stuff, and I don't care whose last name is associated with the band [Irked]

There is a reason that the singer is usually considered the "front man", and the singer usually defines the band. Page/Plant, Richards/Jagger, etc.

I didn't say they should have hung it up after the split, they could "go on and do what they want to do" it is just my opinion that they were "no good, no good, no good" baby they're "no good" [Mad]

After the Dave/VH split in '85, I actually bought the first Van Hagar album 5150. I also bought Dave's first solo album called "Eat 'Em and Smile". One album was filled with a bunch of syruppy piano ballads and an occaisional rock riff, and the other album was what I call "fun rock" or as Dave was quoted as naming "big rock" filled with rock, pizzaz, enthusiasm and charazma.

Guess which artist's albums I kept buying, and which ones I stopped supporting?

I also had to buy the Best of Volume 1 CD to hear the 2 new songs they released with Dave in 1996... and I had to buy the Best of DVD so that I play those first 3 Dave era songs, and then immediately eject it before it got to all that sappy poodle stuff. Unfortunately those were the only 3 Dave era videos that made it to a commercially released VHS or DVD [Mad]

And, last summer when Dave toured with Sam, I endured sitting through FOUR Sam Hagar tequila pushing informercials, where I had to hear his Van Hagar hits, so that I could see Michael Anthony perform on stage those four times [Confused]

Of course, most of what I heard of the Sam & Gary VH eras was whatever was played on the radio or MTV.

Like I said, to each their own. And if the Sam & Gary "hits" didn't move me, why would you think the rest of the album would have a bunch of under promoted tracks to impress me?

Back to the original topic, and the Atomic Punks. No, I don't think Ralph hates Sammy (for reasons I already explained), and no, I would not enjoy this tribute band if they performed Sam & Gary stuff, even with Ralph's warmth and charazma.

Good thing life is filled with choices. The Atomic Punks have chosen to be the best tribute to the best version of Van Halen ever, and many people continue to chose to go see them. We're all lucky for that.

Totally...... [Frown] No one's going to take your Punks away. And last I checked, I don't have the power to change their format into a completely "Sammy" version....nor would I want to. I was just thinking that to shake things up once in a while, for us "younger" set, there could be some Sammy (not Gary) thrown in the mix. That's all. If not, so be it, the Punks are still the best tribute band I've ever seen and I'll continue to attend each and every show, satisfied. And I know we can both agree upon that? [Big Grin]

"Right Now" absolutely moved me. It was so completely different from Dave era VH, but it totally rocked. Great song, great video, great message.

I totally agree, Jenn! That tune absolutely blew me away when it first came out. It was a really great period in my life, too. So, I guess that always helps.

Sammy's alright with me! Anyone who make his own tequila and brings a party wherever he goes, can't be all bad!

How true! He's cool with me, too. I'm thinking of someday heading down to Cabo Wabo to check out his bar! How cool is that? Your own bar, your own brand of tequila? [Smile]

uhhh.... no.... that is an Eddie Van Halen fan shirt (same one I wore the first time I met Ed)...

This is an example of a Van Hagar shirt:

 -

the classic -=VH=- logo had the wings go straight out, but when Hagar joined the band the wings of the logo changed to swirl back [Roll Eyes]

I don't mind showing that I am a fan of Eddie's guitar playing [Thumbs Up!]

None of this changes me to be a fan of the actions or music of Hagar or Cherone [Mad]

Uh Albert, that is a RHRN tour shirt dude, I have one too, got it at Irvine in '93. The back has the dates from that tour. It's about as "Van Hagar" as you can get. Not that it matters to me, Sam with VH was great anyway, because in the end it's all about the "King of 10 fingers and 6 strings!"

And this has definitely strayed far beyond Punks talk into something that like others have said, isn't very productive. Let me know what Scott and Ralph think of that suggestion Joe, and we'll set that up. [Smile]

Don't waste your time Joe, I was done with this topic a long time ago [Frown]

I didn't start the topic (that was "ralph saenz super fan #1")... and if you look back, all my replies but the shirt picture had something to do with the topic and the Atomic Punks [Smile]

And while you are looking back, you'll see that it was your on-topic webmaster TopTimmy who drifted this off to the "Albert in a Van Hagar shirt" area... and you'll see that his post had nothing to do with the Atomic Punks... [Irked]

And the post with my picture didn't have anything to do with the Atomic Punks either... [Irked]

This started as an interesting question about whether the personalities and talents of the Atomic PUnks would carry over well into other eras besides "early Van Halen" and I agree this topic has strayed off into something quite different about trying to convince me why I'm ignorant those other VH eras and about kidding me about how I am a really a closet fan of Sam & Gary [Roll Eyes]

Let's just enjoy the Atomic Punks and leave it at that [Thumbs Up!]

Albert, Tim was joking first of all, hence the smilies. He didn't even post the picture of you, and he was hardly making a big deal about anything, just a little joke in a couple posts. You have to admit it's pretty funny dude come on, you slam Sammy but you're wearing a shirt you could only buy when Sam was in the band. That's classic man. [Smile]

Anyways I'm closing this, I don't think it needs to denegrate any further. Let's get back on track here.
