I know that this should be in the “Fan Review” column but I think this is worth the exception. First, I apologize to the webmaster for posting a review here but it contains other stuff as well.
The Punks played at Nascar in Phoenix. As usual they took over the venue and play the crowed so well that in fact, people forgot that they were at a concert. They thought that they were at a party with the Punks. Thus, this is what really happens at each and every Punk Show. By the end of the night, people were stage diving.
What impresses me the most (besides Ralph sounding like Dave and how close Joe, Scott and Russ sound like the real thing) is at a drop of a dime, this band can pull out tunes from besides Van Halen. Now, whether or not these tunes are planned at a gig or improvised is another question. (and I don’t want to know the answer) At Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) they decided to joke on the “NASCAR, Beer drinking southern Red Necks” and bust out “Sweet Home Alabama”. And believe it or not, it Rocked. It was like seeing Van Halen doing Skynard (or The Punks doing Van Halen doing Lynard Skynard) After they played Skynard, They rolled right into Ozzy’s Crazy Train with Ralph doing his impression of Ozzy’s stage performance. It was not only awesome, but comical as well. Then, they played Guns N Roses- “Sweet Child of Mine” where Ralph sang really well just being himself. Later that evening, they pulled out some Steve Miller Band and capped the night off with Kiss- “Want to Rock N Roll All Night” (and party everyday).
This is the fourth time I have seen the Punks and they actually have become my favorite band. Not only do I get to hear the Punks do Van Halen , I get to hear the Punks do Van Halen doing Ozzy and any other band they want to do and I really enjoy hearing it. But most importantly, the guys are truly very good musicians. (Obviously) Being a Musician (and after the second time I have seen them) I am listening to their playing and singing more than just watching the showmanship. Scott impresses me even more on the drums when I saw him with Moving Pictures. If anyone is going to do Neal, Scott does it. Then, he plays Van Halen right after playing Rush. Remarkable stamina and incredible drum playing. Joe- I am noticing more (paying attention) that you are actually doing the lick s Michael does and I am impressed. Granted, no big deal but your choices of when and where you play those licks are very tasty. Russ- What can you say about his guitar playing? He is a great player … hell he sounded great playing in Fight. Then you have Ralph, who just blows my mind that anyone can sing like Dave night after night. It seems like he gets better each show.
I hope one day I would have an opportunity two hang with the boys for a few hours and ask them a bunch of questions instead of 30 seconds at a time after or before a show.
And by the way, this was the second straight show in Phoenix that Ralph has picked on me to sing the end of ice cream man.
