I'm not Russ but most of Ed's early tone was very mid-heavy. Also Ed created a lot of his early tone and gain by sheer volume, which he was able to increase without blowing out the tubes with a Variac unit.
What kind of amp are you using? Is it a high-gain amp like a 5150 or something more like a Marshall?

Yeah I believe it was a voltage regulator,it'll wear your tubes out fast.Just by a low wattage tube amp and crank the shit out of it.

You seem to know that it's all about the low end... and that you should try and avoid playing certain places the blow your amps.
That's good enough for me.

I have found that a Line 6 POD , or the Line 6 Flextone 3 (which is an amp with that pod built into it basically) can replicate the sound pretty damn good by the use of DSP's in the POD.
Yes geektom does have some benifits. I have the POD myself, plugged into my CRATE Amp, and my Ibanez GR series guitar plugged into the POD. I can't tell the difference. Now if I can only play as good as Russ. But then again, im half def from all the Punks shows ive been to.

I always just stick my head right in front of the amp, and if it doesn't make my ears hurt, I'll keep adding midrange and high end until it does. then I point the amp at Ralph. Russ
