Hi there - we have on our calendar to be in the City on Thursday, 9/18, for Metal Shop ... any word yet on the venue?
Posted by Atomic Angel (Member # 199) on September 10, 2003, 12:26 PM:

Yes...Metal Shop will play at the legendary Avalon Ballroom in SF on thursday, Sept. 18th. Confirmed. I'll be there as the MC/Host for the show...my name is Paulie ( I work for an SF radio station). See you there. Come strong!

Thanks for your info Zander.
I know things are busy with the band, but the SF show is 3 days away and, as of yet, I haven't seen or heard anything about this show locally.
I'll definitely be there if this is going to happen, but can someone representing the band confirm this and update the calendar if it's still a go?
Thanks!

When I spoke to Ralph about 3 weeks ago, Atomic Angel, he confirmed the show. Ralph, you out there, man? Can you confirm it now?
If no answer pops up here before tonight, I'll double check with him tonight at the Metal Shop show, and post whatever he tells me, okay?

Thanks Tracy for offering to help
I did see the link on the home page for the SF show, so now I know where to buy tixs, what time to get there, etc.
Thanks for the update! See you guys on Thursday

You're welcome, Atomic Angel.
Why don't you go ahead and post it here for the rest of the SF area fans to know as well? * waves at PunkPrincess *

Thank god Metalshop has come to San Francisco! I love them and will continue to rearrange my life to see them.........That Ralph Saenz is H-O-T!!!! I am seeing Def Leppard this Thursday......but I am going STRAIGHT from their show in Concord to see Metalshop at Avalon! I can't miss a week without them!

Hey folks-
Local Van Halen tribute "Hot for Teacher" is going to open this show. They are great - Terry the guitarist has quite the chops! I sure hope they book for next week, I am going to miss this Thursday.
Have a great time all!

Hmmm...I was hoping that Metal Shop would have local bands that weren't tribute bands open for them. Kind of like at the Viper Room...I think it would be a great way to bring some fun into the local scene.
Posted by Atomic Angel (Member # 199) on September 30, 2003, 02:42 PM:
I think its kind of odd that they would book a Van Halen tribute band to open for Metal Shop when Russ and Ralph are in the PREMIER Van Halen tribute band. If they're going to book Hot For Teacher, why not go for the best and book the Punks?!? I mean, that's why we're all on this site, right?
Nothing against HFT, I've never seen them. But if they were going to pick a tribute band to open for Metal Shop, could they pick one that isn't Van Halen? I don't think I'd want to open for Russ and Ralph - imho no one can top the Punks, unless its DLR and EVH themselves!
Long live the Punks!!!
Posted by PunkPrincess (Member # 223) on September 30, 2003, 02:52 PM:
Well, if a tribute band MUST open for Metal Shop can they at least wear costumes? The AC/DC tribute band wasn't even dressed for the occasion. I hope Hot for Teacher at least dresses the part.
Or is it unusual for a tribute band to dress up? I thought it was kind of like theater...playing a role...as an homage if you will...
Regardless, I still would like to see some local non-tribute bands get up there and rock!

They should try and book Bang Tango to open for Metal Shop. I saw their show at the VR about a month ago, and it rocked!
Pyromania (Def Leppard tribute) would be another good choice, although my favorite version of "Photograph" is the one done by MS. So I'm biased, sue me...

I think it would be rough for Ralph to sing in both bands back to back. He's got SOME damn vocal chords to be doing the amount of shows he does a week...every week. I'm envious.
Posted by Rocker22 (Member # 296) on September 30, 2003, 09:22 PM:
Hey folks-
Naw, they don't dress up. Musically, they are great- the drummer used to be in Vicious Rumors, the bass player is killer and said he was in the Atomic Punks back in the day! The guitarist is damn good, too! I know it will be better than the AC/DC band. As far as local bands, the promoter needs to get the word out. I don't know what is happening in that dept., the HFT guys told me that they just found out this week about the show, and also that they are doing it mainly for publicity, cause the pay doesn't make it worth it.
I am going to try and scrape to get there this Thursday, wish me luck!

Back in my webmaster days I learned that a "cover band" only plays the music of one or more bands, while a "tribute band" attempts to recreate the look, mannerisms, equipment, personality, style, etc. for a specific band
I think Marky Mark had a line about it the move Rock Star.
So the Atomic Punks are the ultimate Van Halen tribute band, while Metal Shop is more like a parody/cover band
I'm guessing that since HFT is local to SF, they were booked for the exposure to the local scene. I think the logistics are difficult for two headline acts (Metal Shop and the Atomic Punks) to both play the same night. I've never seen HFT, but I think a little "competition" couldn't hurt.
BTW, I've seen a dedicated tribute/cover band open for the Atomic Punks or Metal Shop, and then our guys just play a little bit of a song and just blow them away!

Thanks for the clarification, Albert. I guess I was too busy just looking at Marky Mark to pay attention to what he was saying in that movie

Speaking of the movie "Rock Star"
Fun fact of the day:
The part where mark w. and jenifer a. are about to enter the studio, The guy who just comes out of the audition right before mark comes in is none other than Ralph!
But I'm sure you hardcore punks fans knew that already!
Posted by PunkPrincess (Member # 223) on October 01, 2003, 03:39 PM:
There is a pitcher on the Giants who plays that Steel Dragon song whenever he first takes the mound.

Ralph in a brunette wig
Another fun fact, the singer of the song "California Girls" (in the style of David Lee Roth) when Marky Mark's plane is landing at LAX is none other than our Ralph!
Wish the song would have made it to the soundtrack

You guys get ready for HFT, I know you'll be impressed. No wigs and costumes, just solid kick ass entertainment.

I am looking forward to the Atomic Punks in Sacto next weekend.
BTW, you did a great job MCing Ette!

Hey, if you guys are still looking for a new venue for the Metal Shop show, I just wanted to post this link I found: Bay Area Venue Directory
Some of the links on there are a little old, but it's still a pretty good list. Most of the clubs listed are fairly well established and known/frequented by most of your target audience. Most of the clubs advertise in the Sunday Datebook section of the San Francisco Chronicle, the SF Weekly and the SF Guardian. These are the three sources where most people in the Bay Area traditionally get their entertainment information.
